Job Summary:

As a PMLD Teaching Assistant specialising in behaviour support, you will work closely with students who have complex needs and behavioural challenges associated with PMLD. Your role will involve providing individualised support, implementing behaviour management strategies, and fostering a positive learning environment. Through your dedication and expertise, you will enable students to overcome barriers, develop social skills, and reach their full potential.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one support to students with PMLD, focusing on behaviour management and promoting positive social interactions.
  • Implement individualised behaviour support plans developed in collaboration with the teaching team, therapists, and parents/guardians.
  • Create a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports students’ emotional well-being and encourages their active participation.
  • Use proactive strategies and techniques to de-escalate challenging behaviours and promote self-regulation.
  • Collaborate with the teaching team and therapists to ensure consistency in implementing behaviour support strategies across different settings.
  • Monitor and record student progress, behaviours, and incidents, providing regular feedback to the teaching team and relevant stakeholders.
  • Support students in developing independent living skills, communication abilities, and social interactions.
  • Adapt and modify teaching materials and resources to meet the diverse needs of students with PMLD.
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, including therapists and external professionals, to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to support.
  • Stay up-to-date with current best practices, research, and training related to PMLD and behaviour support.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Relevant qualifications or experience in working with students with PMLD and behaviour support.
  • Solid understanding of PMLD and associated behaviours, as well as strategies for promoting positive behaviour and social interaction.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with complex needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to changing situations.
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team, contributing to a positive and collaborative working environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the unique needs of individual students and respond to their changing requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of assistive technologies and resources that can support students with PMLD.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and policies related to special educational needs and disability.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students.
