From Mentored to Mentor

Category: Mentoring

Every young person deserves someone who believes in them – especially when they’re struggling to believe in themselves. At Lexia Education Services, we’ve seen time and again how one relationship can change a life.

This is Tom’s Story:

A powerful example of what happens when support is consistent, compassionate, and rooted in belief. It’s also a story about becoming the person you once needed – and helping others do the same.

The Right Support Can Change Everything

When Tom first joined us, he was in a difficult place – wrestling with his own challenges and trying to find his footing.

At Lexia, we saw his potential.
We never expected him to have it all figured out.
We thought, why not support Tom – by showing him we believed in him, even when he couldn’t yet see what he was capable of.

We are proud to say – That support became a turning point.
Now, two years on, Tom isn’t just thriving – He’s mentoring young people who’ve walked the same road he once did.

“You Believed in Me – Even When I Didn’t”

Tom recently shared this message with us. We were humbled – and deeply moved:

“I wanted to let you know how much of an impact you’ve had on my life, and indirectly on all the young people that I have supported through the last 2 years.
You stood by me and supported me through some of the most challenging times of my life, never losing faith, when I’d lost faith in myself.
I can’t put into words how much of a positive effect you’ve had on me, without even realising. You showed me that there are real, genuinely good people out there in this world, a world that has beaten me down so much throughout my life so far.
You have been one of the most prominent mentors I’ve had in my life, the impact you’ve had on me, and through me, will live on forever.
I’m gonna change this world, you’ll always be a part of that – Thank you Lexia.”
– Tom, Lexia Mentor

Tom is Someone that Others can Rely On

He now brings the same unwavering belief and care into his mentoring work – helping young people who are where he once was.

Turning Struggle into Strength

Tom’s story isn’t the only mentor at Lexia, who has dealt with hardships in life. Many of our mentors have faced real adversity:

For example:

  • Struggles with mental health
  • ADHD or other learning differences
  • Exclusion from school or feeling like they didn’t belong
  • A lack of consistent role models growing up
  • But instead of letting those experiences hold them back, they’ve used them to connect, inspire, and lead.
  • At Lexia, we believe those experiences can be developed into strengths – not always setbacks.

What It Means to Be a Lexia Mentor

Mentors provide more than just an extra staff member at your school.

Lexia mentors:

  • Build meaningful 1:1 relationships with young people
  • Support those with SEN, SEMH, ADHD, and complex life challenges
  • Help young people feel seen, heard, and safe
  • Show them what’s possible, just by being present and believing in them

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to care – and be willing to grow.
