At Lexia Education Services, we are dedicated to providing exceptional educational support to children with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). We are currently seeking a compassionate and skilled PMLD Mentor and Teaching Assistant to join our team in Somerset. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in supporting and empowering children with PMLD to overcome barriers, foster their development, and promote their overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Individualised Support: Provide personalised support and guidance to children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Develop and implement individual learning plans to address their specific needs, maximising their potential for growth and progress.
- Personal Care: Assist with personal care tasks, including feeding, toileting, dressing, and hygiene routines. Ensure the safety, comfort, and dignity of each child while promoting their independence to the fullest extent possible.
- Communication and Interaction: Support children in developing their communication and interaction skills. Utilize alternative communication methods, such as visual aids, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, and other assistive technologies to facilitate meaningful communication.
- Sensory Stimulation: Create a stimulating and sensory-rich environment to engage children and promote their sensory development. Incorporate sensory activities and resources that cater to their individual sensory preferences and sensitivities.
- Curriculum Implementation: Collaborate with teachers and therapists to implement a modified curriculum tailored to the individual needs of children with PMLD. Adapt teaching materials and strategies to facilitate meaningful and accessible learning experiences.
- Behaviour Management: Employ effective behaviour management techniques to promote a positive and supportive learning environment. Use proactive strategies, de-escalation techniques, and positive reinforcement to address challenging behaviours and promote social and emotional well-being.
- Collaboration and Teamwork: Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to the children’s education and care. Foster positive relationships and effective communication to support the children’s overall development.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Relevant Experience: Previous experience working with children with profound and multiple learning difficulties is essential. Experience in special education, PMLD-specific interventions, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Empathy and Patience: Demonstrate empathy, patience, and understanding when working with children with complex needs. Create a nurturing and inclusive environment that promotes their well-being and fosters their self-esteem.
- Adaptability and Flexibility: Ability to adapt to the individual needs and abilities of each child. Demonstrate flexibility in implementing different strategies and approaches to meet their diverse learning requirements.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to effectively engage and interact with children with PMLD. Ability to work closely with parents and professionals, providing updates and progress reports as required.
- Personal Care Skills: Proficiency in providing personal care tasks to ensure the comfort and dignity of children with PMLD. Knowledge of relevant health and safety procedures and the ability to handle equipment and assistive devices.
- Safeguarding Knowledge: A comprehensive understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures, ensuring the well-being and safety of the children at all times.
- Team Player: Strong collaborative skills, working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Willingness to contribute and share expertise to enhance the overall support provided to children with PMLD.
